Many people start out trying to make money online by creating a product and then trying to find a market to buy it. This however is the wrong way to go about it. If you want to make lots of money on the internet then you have to find out what people want to buy and then give it to them. Once you discover a hungry crowd of eager buyers, then you can profit from creating your own or recommending someone else’s products or services.
While you may want to market to a niche that you have a personal interest in, there is plenty of money to be made in other niches that you might not find so interesting. However, if you find a niche that is profitable and you have some expertise or personal interest in it, then that makes your marketing efforts even more satisfying. Either way, you can make money in any profitable niche with some research and sharing what you learn.
You can get niche ideas from just about anything you do or anywhere you go. A simple trip to the mall can give you plenty of ideas about what people are currently buying. Also think about your hobbies or things you like to do in your spare time or what other people you know like doing. Another great way to find ideas is to keep up with current events. While some of these niche ideas may be short-lived fads, many popular products and services that people are interested in buying now are long lasting niches and the only thing that changes is the latest style or newest gadget.
Yahoo! Buzz is a great place to check out what the world is currently searching for information about and can give you some ideas for niches.
Google Trends is also a wonderful research tool for finding hot search topics. They also have a free tool that lets you compare the popularity of multiple search terms.
eBay Pulse is another great site to check out what people want to buy online.
Now that you have some ideas for what people are currently looking for, you need to see if they are also willing to pay money in those niches as well. Just because it has lots of current searches doesn’t necessarily mean that a niche is a profitable one.
If you want to find out what people are spending money on, you can get a reasonably good idea from seeing how many different books and magazines there are on a particular subject. The more there are, it stands to reason, the more people willing to spend money on that niche. You can use the search bar on Amazon.com to find a large selection of books and magazines on just about any subject. You can start with a broad subject and then try to narrow it down to a more targeted sub-niche. For example, “crafts” is a very broad term, whereas, “scrapbooking” is a more targeted term. The idea is to have a term that has a reasonably high amount of searches and low amount of competing websites.
Next you can go to Google and type in a search for the specific phrase you’ve selected. If there are lots of sponsored ad results on the right hand side of the page, that is a good indication that people are spending money since advertisers are spending money to reach them.
Once you have a niche that is targeted and a good indication that it has potential buyers you can proceed with a test run on your chosen niche to see if it is indeed profitable as only real time results and real buyers can confirm whether a niche is truly profitable or not. All the research in the world will not make you any money unless you use the results of the data and take action.
